time loops

Time is an intriguing enigma. It cannot be perceived directly; we perceive it through objects, movement and the representational powers of aesthetic processes.

Photography’s inherent manifestations of time, such as the time an image was captured, exposure time, the time it took to record the image, the viewers time looking at the image and the speed of dissemination exist in a linear space of functional, objective time; time expressed with numbers, the time of calendars, and timelines on social media.

These images explore what happens when we bypass some of photography’s visual constituents that compel us to experience time within the constraints of traditional representation. Visual strategies, such as arrays of at first glance seemingly similar images and multiple composites shift and transform the intuitive connection between signifier and signified and offer a different, non-linear experience of time Bergson defined as ‘duration’; time without the innate finality of functional time axes.

Non-linear time is mutable, has no predefined beginning or end and thus can be experienced as a time loop.

Time loops are a paradox; standstill as well as a gesture of potential.
